Last year, after attending an advanced event in Cancun, I returned to Austin, Texas. Just six days later, while rushing through errands at Whole Foods, I experienced a life-altering accident in the parking garage. Navigating between cars, I tripped over a concrete parking barrier. As I fell forward, my phone flew out of my purse. I immediately sensed something was seriously wrong with my arm, which I could no longer move. Despite the pain and shock, I managed to call my daughter for help.
While waiting for her to arrive, I encountered a passerby whose eyes widened with surprise upon seeing me on the ground. I asked him to fetch a manager, which he did promptly. The manager came, called 911, and EMS arrived just as my daughter did. The diagnosis was severe: a dislocated right shoulder, a fractured arm, a dislocated left wrist, a fractured wrist, and a fractured left kneecap.
Surgery took place ten days later, involving pins and plates. The unexpected turn of events pulled me out of my usual routine and left me in a state of dependency. I couldn’t do anything except wander around my apartment with limited mobility, my right arm immobilized against my chest and a brace on the left. My day-to-day life shifted dramatically as my daughter prepared smoothies for me, and I relied heavily on what little dexterity I had left.
During this time, I found solace and structure in the meditations of Dr. Joe Dispenza. Playing his CDs three times a day, they became a crucial part of my healing process. As a massage therapist, being out of work meant losing my primary source of income, adding a layer of financial stress to my physical ordeal. Remarkably, support poured in from unexpected places. I had fortunately signed up for Medicare just before the accident, kicking in right when I needed it most. Colleagues from the destination spa where I work took up a collection, raising over $300. Friends sent money, and one particularly generous friend from Houston, who had just sold her house, covered my rent, bills, and food for two months. This outpouring of support felt nothing short of miraculous. Through moments of fear and uncertainty, my meditative practice helped ground me. Leaning into these exercises helped me manage fear and keep a positive outlook. Reflecting on the entire experience, it was clear how vital the meditations had become to my daily routine. Since the incident, I rarely miss a session, beginning each day with this centering practice.
The entire episode—from the accident to my return to work eight weeks later—was a testament to resilience, community support, and the power of mindfulness. My experience highlights the unpredictable nature of life and the incredible capacity for recovery and support that can manifest even in the most challenging circumstances.
